Infrared with Fuji X10

Fuji X10, Hoya R72, Auto WB, GIMP

Brisbane finally got some clouds, and I took some infrared pictures with Fuji X10 using Hoya R72 filter and small Manfrotto digital tripod . It was windy, so the foliage is blurry. More pictures were posted on my flickr account.

I still cannot figure out how to use Fuji X10 for infrared. Maybe I should do more post-processing in GIMP, not just level adjustment.

For infrared shooting I generally use Black and White R mode on Fuji X10 at base iso. The photo above was taken with Auto white balance, but use of a custom WB with a low value on Kelvin scale (2500K) gives better structure / resolution for clouds on sunny day.

Infrared with Olympus C-2020

Both pictures were taken with Olympus C-2020 in Sepia mode and R72 filter. Wat Yansangwararam, near Pattaya, Thailand. The photo on the top was rotated and cropped in GIMP. I've posted couple other IR photos on flickr.

The camera had 2MP sensor and maximum iso was 400 or something like that. I used it with 32 Mb SM card which can store about 100 JPEG files. That's equal to three film rolls!

Infrared with Fuji X10

Fuji X10 with Hoya R72 filter on 40mm-49mm step-up adapter ring. The photo above was shot as JPEG in standard color mode using Auto white balance and converted to black-and-white mode in GIMP using the Desaturate option. The levels were changed to increase contrast and make the image darker. Tech: iso 200, exposure 5.3 seconds, F4.0.

The image below was shot as black-and-white JPEG in red channel, and the levels were changed in GIMP. Tech: iso 200, exposure compensation -0.3, F3.6, exposure 2.5 sec. It seems that the camera can be used for infrared photography even without any modifications.The pictures were taken in Japanese Garden, Brisbane Botanic Garden on Mt.Coot-tha.
