Nikon P7700 vs Canon G15

Nearly all major camera makers updated their advanced compact model this year. Both Nikon and Canon upgraded lenses on their models, Coolpix P7700 and G15. Nikon has very attractive zoom range, 28-200 mm eqv and fairly bright  F2-4 max aperture which is similar to old Minolta Dimage A1/A2 cameras. Canon put 28-140 mm eqv F1.8 - F2.8 lens. Both cameras have 1/1.7" 12MP sensors. Both are less pocketable than Olympus XZ-2. CameraLab posted a review of P7700 with comparison shots against Canon G15. I like approach of the real-life shots used by this site.

Olympus E-PL5 vs Canon M

The site also has Olympus PEN E-PL5 review with shots against the first Canon mirrorless camera, Canon M. It seems that at the setting used for high iso shots, Olympus E-PL5 has certain edge over Canon M (see iso 800 or 1600 shots). Probably with careful RAW processing it would be possible to have different outcome but nevertheless this comparison demonstrates how good is the sensor and JPEG / image processing in Olympus E-PL5 and OM-D E-M5 (both cameras share the same sensor and image processing).

Test samples from Nikon Coolpix P7700

The dpreview has published the test shots for Nikon Coolpix P7700. The camera uses 1/1.7" back-illuminated sensor, and it seems that the images are slightly better at higher iso. Similar (the same?) sensor is present in the latest advanced compact cameras from other manufacturers (Olympus XZ-2). Nikon P7700 has very attractive lens, the longest in advanced compact cameras, covering 28-200 mm (35 mm eqv) with fairly big maximal aperture, F2.0-F4.0. [Fuji X-S1 has even bigger zoom and bigger sensor but it is not really compact camera]. While P7700 lost an optical viewfinder of its predecessor, it has a fully articulated screen and extensive external controls. Frankly, the difference in image quality between cameras in the same category is not huge, and I suspect that the "fine-tuning" of any advance model can have bigger effect. For example, I use the lowest setting for noise reduction on Fuji X10, and most my pictures were taken at iso 100 or 200, and I am happy with the resolution. I wish Fuji X10 would have build-in neutral density filter as Nikon P7700 or Panasonic LX7, because the maximal shutter speed on Fuji X10 at open aperture is about 1/1000 sec, and on sunny day at some point the diffraction can be an issue.

On other hand, right now Nikon 1 mirrorless camera can be bought on Amazon for less than 500 USD for a single lens kit (10-30mm), and two lens kit (including 30-100mm lens) is priced at 600+. While the whole thing is not compact, it is not huge camera by any means. The images are amazingly good for 1" sensor. While kit lenses are not fast, the focus is very fast, and 30-110mm lens offer longer reach (~300 mm 35mm equv) compared to P7700. At that price it is very tempting buy. For sure, Nikon 1 V2 will be better camera, but it is not announced yet, and the price probably will be higher.

For me the advantage of compact cameras such as P7700 are: bright optics, external controls (buttons and dials) and super-macro mode. I have not mentioned size and weight because my Fuji X10 is not significantly smaller or lighter than Nikon 1 cameras with 10-30mm lens. Frankly, I prefer to have camera with good lens over pocketable camera, but it is personal folly. Just to be clear: compact cameras such as Olympus XZ-1 / XZ-2 or Panasonic LX7 produce very good images, but the manual zoom on Fuji X10 is just joy to use. For me Fuji X10 is a toy camera: I like to play with it :-)

Nikon P7700

Nikon had announced a new advanced compact camera, Coolpix P7700. The new model has brighter lens, 28-200mm F2.0 - F4.0, than P7100, and can take 40.5mm filters without an adapter - that's great. The sensor specs (1/1.7" 12MP back-illuminated CMOS) are similar to BSI CMOS sensor used in Samsung EX2F, and it can be a Sony sensor. Apparently back-illuminated sensors give about one stop improvement in noise over conventional sensors. Some full-size imaged from Samsung EX2F are posted on flickr.

Nikon P7700 has very attractive lens which goes to 200mm and remains relatively bright (F4.0). According to dpreview it has a new / updated vibration reduction system, and according to imaging resource the camera is more responsible than the predecessor.

 The camera lost optical viewfinder, and this can reduce cost of the assembly. In compact cameras optical viewfinders are very small, and usually suffer from parallax issues. I practically do not use OVF on my Fuji X10 (and Fuji has relatively big viewfinder). Some people claim that shooting with optical viewfinder increases camera stability but I have higher proportion of sharp photos from Fuji X10 used at arm length than from Olympus E-30+14-54mm lens and traditional DSLR shooting style. For long exposure I use a camera strap for additional stability: I push camera forward with the strap around my neck, so the camera does not shake much. So, do not see the absence of the optical viewfinder as a big problem. The camera should be cheaper without a viewfinder :) 

Samsung NX2F and Panasonic DMC-LX7 have brighter lenses but both are below 100mm. Nikon P7700 has build-in neutral density filter (three stops), and I wish my Fuji X10 would have one. The maximal shutter speed of Fuji X10 at F2.0 is about 1/1000 sec, so at bright sun it takes pictures only at closed aperture. Otherwise, Nikon P7700 looks very attractive, mainly because of its lens and size. The lens specs are similar to old Minolta Dimage 7 but the camera is smaller. The only reservation I have is a dynamic range but hopefully reviews of the P7700 will be available in nearby future.
